New Nurses" Experience on Care of Dying Patients

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe how new nurses coped with difficulties in dying patients care.

Methods: The subjects were seven nurses who had experience of working at oncology and intensive care units of general hospitals in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do for one-year. The data analysis utilized a method of constant comparative method, while the data analysis was done, according to the procedure of the grounded theory proposed by Strauss & Corbin.

Results: The core category about the new nurses" experience on care of dying patients was the process of being "routine" when facing their patients" death. Its whole process was shown as three sequential steps; draw back, experience, and get off.

Conclusion: Based on the understanding of new nurses" experience on care of dying patients, the results of this research can provide new insight for the nursing practice and education. Furthermore, it can help new nurses to get used to their patients" death by using their experience as a base.
